Ojibwa Legend of the Sleeping Bear. A long time ago, a terrible forest fire raged in what is now Wisconsin, along the shores of Lake Michigan. In an effort to flee the conflagration, a mother bear and her two cubs tried to swim across the enormous lake, towards present-day Michigan. When the mother reached the far shore, she climbed to the top of a bluf to await her cubs, who had grown tired and lagged behind. As she waited, the sands collected around her, creating Sleeping Bear Dune. Tough the cubs sadly drowned in the lake, the Great Spirit took pity on the grieving mother and raised her children from the dept as North and South Manitou Islands. (from Moon Handbooks Michigan)
